Two nights with one parent, two with the other, then a three-night weekend that alternates. Over two weeks it comes out even.

The rotation

A = one parent, B = the other. Each cell is one overnight. This rotation divides regular school-year overnights 50/50 — about 182 and 182 nights a year.

Who it tends to suit

Younger children who do better with frequent contact, and parents who live close together and communicate easily.

The honest trade-off

No long gap between seeing either parent, which is why it's the most common 50/50 schedule for little kids. The cost is exchanges — six a fortnight, roughly double most other schedules — so it only works when handoffs are calm and the drive is short.

Exchanges

Exchange at school or daycare wherever possible; it removes most of the contact this schedule requires.
