Child support & overnights

Does 50/50 custody mean no child support?

It's the most common assumption in co-parenting, and it's often wrong. Equal overnights do not automatically mean nobody pays.

This is general information, not legal or financial advice — and it does not calculate support. Child support is set by your state's official guideline applied to your family's finances. We don't publish thresholds or dollar amounts. For a real number, use your state's child support guideline (most offer an official calculator) and talk to a family-law attorney.

Equal time is not the whole calculation

A 50/50 schedule means each parent has about half the overnights. But most state guidelines also weigh each parent's income — so when one parent earns more than the other, that parent may still owe support even with time split evenly. The goal of the guideline is roughly consistent support for the child across both homes, not a reward for equal time.

Whether support is owed at 50/50, and how much, depends on your state's formula applied to both incomes and the child's costs. Some families at 50/50 owe nothing; many owe something. We can't tell you which — your state's guideline can.

Don't trade time for money without advice

Because time and support interact through the state formula, it's a mistake to negotiate the parenting schedule as a way to change a support number, or vice versa. The schedule should be what actually works for the child; the support figure follows from the guideline.

If you're weighing a 50/50 arrangement and what it means for support, that's a question for your state's guideline and a family-law attorney — not for a rule of thumb.

Count your overnights

The arithmetic part — counting overnights from your actual pattern — is something we can help with. The money is your state's to calculate.
