Child support is set by your state's guideline, not by a schedule — but in most states the number of overnights each parent has is one of the inputs. Here's the general relationship, and where the actual math has to come from.
Overnights are an input, not the whole formula
Every U.S. state sets child support with a published guideline formula. Most use one of two broad models — 'income shares' (both parents' incomes combined) or 'percentage of the paying parent's income' — and many adjust the result for how parenting time is divided, measured in overnights.
So overnights matter, but they are one variable among several: each parent's income, the cost of the child's health insurance and childcare, and other state-specific factors usually weigh in too. The overnight count rarely sets the number on its own.
More overnights can shift the calculation — how much depends on your state
As a general rule, the more overnights a parent has, the more it can affect that parent's side of the calculation. Some states apply a different formula once parenting time crosses a 'shared parenting' threshold; the threshold, and what happens when you cross it, differ from state to state.
Because that varies so much, we don't publish thresholds or dollar figures — a number that's right in one state is simply wrong in the next. What's portable is the mechanic: count your overnights accurately, then apply YOUR state's guideline.
